Performing a Search
New look/feel The search function has been improved and now includes the ability to search blogs, communities, people, custom PPTs and added resources. There are two options for searching: “simple” and “advanced”.
Simple searches (show image here) defaults to “all words” and you can select which section of the portal you like (contents, blogs, communities, people, custom PPTs or resources). Search will also context-switch for you so that when you are in another section like Blogs or Communities, the simple search will default to that section for you.
Advanced searches allow you to select whether you want “All words”, “Any words” or “Exact Phrase” to guide your search results. In addition, for some searches you can use date range or category filters or search blog entries.
Added search capabilities Blogs What is searched When searching for blogs, you will get search results based on username and blog titles. When searching for blog entries, you will get search results based on username, blog entry title, and blog entry text. (show example here)
Communities What is searched When searching for communities, you will get search results based on community name and description. (show example here)
People What is searched When searching for people, you will get search results based on the users’ first name, last name, username (if activated), email address, bio, job title and theater. (show example here)
Custom PPTs What is searched When searching for shared custom PPTs, you will get search results based on the CPPT’s title, description and author. Note that only custom PPTs shared in a user’s profile will be searched. Custom PPTs that are not shared in a user’s profile or those only shared to communities will not be part of search results. (show example here)
Resources What is searched When searching for resources, you will get search results based on the resource title, description and the name of who uploaded the resource. (show example here)
To perform a search, enter a keyword or string into the search box. By default, vPortal will perform a search across all the content data in the database, including presentation title, presenter name, slide title, slide text, transcript text, and metadata associated with the individual presentations. The following search options are available:
Search Using: Alter the manner in which vPortal looks for matches by selecting one of the following search modes:
Equivalent to 'AND' power search
Equivalent to 'OR' power search
Equivalent to "quoted text" power search
For example, 'data AND center*' would return hits for 'data center' and 'data centers'; 'cluster*' would return hits for 'cluster', 'clusters' and 'clustering'
Search Within: When browsing within a course or presentation, you have the additional option of restricting the scope of the search to:
Results Display: You may select the granularity with which vPortal displays the results:
Filters: You may optionally apply additional filters to the search results as follows:
Viewing Search Results
Search results are displayed at the presentation level by default. The presentation appears above the topic results with additional information and launch options for the presentation. The search term is bold and underlined within the topic title. If nothing is highlighted in the title, the search string can exist either within the transcript for that topic or within the body text of the associated topic. Clicking on a topic title launches the presentation at the time that topic occurs within the presentation.
When displaying 'Topics & Transcripts', the transcript search results appear beneath the associated topic with the search term bold and underlined. Clicking on a transcript segment launches the presentation at the time the transcript occurs within the presentation.
When displaying 'Presentations', only presentations and the associated information and options appear in the search results. Clicking on the presentation title launches the presentation from the beginning. Additional icons to the right of the presentation title may provide links to transcripts, various media options, and additional downloads associated with the particular presentation.
Place the mouse over the topic and transcript segment links to view additional options. Click the book icon
Sorting Search Results
Search results are displayed according to search relevance by default. Select a desired sort option from the pull down menu at the top of the results. Options include Relevancy, Most Recent First, Oldest First, and Alphabetically. When a change to sort style is made, that sort style will be remembered in future sorts.
